Tick Tock Tick Tock

No, not that Tik Tok, this version was written about 25 years ago and is more of the Grandfather’s Clock version of the old phrase. This Tick Tock is a dynamic, reflective, musical piece that transports listeners from wherever they might be to a classroom setting, where students are taking their final big test. Introspectively, the students sing of their pasts, presents, and futures.

“Listen to the ticking clock” symbolizes the limited time we have in life to pursue our ambitions. Mr. Johnson, the new teacher, acting as test proctor, tells the class that the exam will begin precisely at nine o’clock. As the ticking of the clock grows louder, it provides a rhythmic backdrop for the students to reveal their innermost thoughts.

Josef, who hails from Moscow, expresses the importance of education in his homeland, acknowledging that although life was relatively good as a doctor in his country, the wages he earned prompted him to emigrate to America, where he believes he can be even more successful. His experience contrasts with that of José from Mexico, who has only worked low-paying jobs in his life but is determined to excel through study and sheer effort.

Nguyen Tran’s rock and roll-inspired ballad brings another perspective. It recounts a life that spanned Saigon, Kentucky, and now, San Francisco. Although he was once a young scamp in search of food and clothing, he is now grateful for having been brought to this country by his GI Dad and is committed to making the most of his miraculous chance to start anew in America.

Enrique’s verse examines one’s ideal of self-worth vis a vis education. He shares his father’s belief that education is the key to escaping a life of poverty and achieving success. He yearns to be “more than just a pair of hands.”

Mei Li’s solo reminds us that her infatuation with Mr. Johnson has not yet diminished as she fantasizes about being “swept away in his arms.” Her prospects, however, remain dim.

Amidst these dramas, the students’ chant builds to a fever pitch. Their desire to “move up” and overcome the challenges they face as immigrants is plain.

The ticking clock strikes ten. The test is over. The end of the year celebration is near. By tradition, everyone who attends must bring a pot-luck dish, but luck will be hard to find as devastating news awaits the students when they arrive at their final party.
